SMA Monitoring Systems

EXPANDING

SMA Sunny Portal

URL: sunnyportal.com

SMA's cloud monitoring platform. Residential systems with internet connectivity report here.

Key functions: - Real-time and historical production data - System overview and string performance - Event log and fault history - Energy balance reporting

Accessing a site: Client must add technician as a user, or provide credentials.

SMA Energy Meter

Hardware device that provides grid export/import metering and enables consumption monitoring. Some SMA systems include this; many older installs do not.

Without an Energy Meter: only generation data is available (not consumption or export).

Local Monitoring (No Cloud)

On-site access without cloud connectivity:

  • Sunny Home Manager: SMA's local monitoring hub for some systems
  • Direct Bluetooth: Connect with SMA's own app (Sunny Explorer or newer SMA app)
  • Speedwire: Ethernet-based direct connection for configuration

For systems without Sunny Portal access: use SMA's native app tools (Sunny Explorer or direct Bluetooth app) for local inverter diagnostics. Note that SetApp is SolarEdge-specific and is not used on SMA systems.

What to Check When Production Looks Low

  1. Compare against similar days (same season, same approximate conditions)
  2. Check specific strings individually if dual-MPPT inverter
  3. Review event log for fault codes during the period
  4. Check shadow analysis — seasonal shade patterns change
  5. Look for soiling or bird activity in the array photos
