SMA Systems¶
SMA is one of the world's largest inverter manufacturers and represents a significant portion of legacy commercial solar in the NYC/Tri-State market. Wadadli Solar encounters SMA systems frequently in commercial O&M and inspection work.

SMA vs. SolarEdge — Quick Context¶
| Feature | SMA (String) | SolarEdge (DC-Optimized) |
|---|---|---|
| Per-panel optimization | No (one MPPT per string) | Yes (optimizer per panel) |
| Shade tolerance | Low | High |
| Rapid shutdown | Requires separate equipment | Built-in (SafeDC) |
| Per-panel monitoring | No | Yes |
| Field complexity | Lower (fewer components) | Higher |
| Common use | Legacy commercial, simple residential | Newer residential, shaded sites |
Common SMA Models in Wadadli Fleet¶
| Model | Power | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunny Boy 3.0–7.7 | 3–7.7 kW | Residential | Very common on pre-2018 residential installs |
| Sunny Boy Storage | 2.5–6 kW | Residential w/ storage | Battery integration |
| Sunny Tripower | 15–25 kW | Commercial | Multi-string commercial |
| Sunny Central | 500kW+ | Utility | Not common in our portfolio |
Key Concept: String Behavior¶
In an SMA string inverter system, the inverter operates the string at one operating voltage — the maximum power point of the string as a whole. If one panel underperforms due to shade or failure, the entire string is affected.
This is why: - Shade analysis is critical at design time for string systems - String mismatch is a common finding in aging commercial systems - SolarEdge or Tigo retrofit is sometimes recommended for shaded string systems
