Optimizer Failures — Field Documentation¶
EXPANDING
SolarEdge power optimizer failures are one of the most commonly encountered issues in the Wadadli Solar residential portfolio. This page documents failure patterns and field-confirmed diagnoses.
How Optimizer Failures Present¶
In Monitoring¶
- Single module shows as "not communicating" or gray in the monitoring map
- Single module shows unusually low or zero production compared to neighbors
- String production lower than expected — may indicate multiple failing units
- Intermittent communication drops (may precede full failure)
In SolarEdge GO (or SetApp on legacy systems)¶
- Module shows communication error
- Module shows fault code
- Module listed as not paired or not responding
Physical Inspection¶
- Optimizer LED is off or red (when LEDs are visible under the panel)
- Physical damage to optimizer body (rare)
- MC4 connector issue at optimizer input or output
Failure Modes¶
Hard Failure — Unit Dead¶
Presentation: Module missing from monitoring entirely. Constant, not intermittent.
Confirm: SolarEdge GO → Module Monitoring → unit absent or showing fault
Resolution: Physical inspection (check connectors), then replacement.
Communication Failure — PLC Break¶
Presentation: Unit offline. May affect all downstream units (units farther from inverter in the DC chain).
Cause: Break in PLC communication on the DC string.
Diagnose: Is it the last unit in the chain, or are there units downstream? If downstream units are also offline, the break is at or before the first offline unit.
Resolution: Trace DC string for physical break or failed optimizer causing communication failure.
Intermittent Failure¶
Presentation: Unit comes and goes in monitoring. May correspond to temperature cycles (fails when hot, recovers when cool).
Note: Intermittent failures often become permanent failures within weeks to months. Document and plan replacement.
Replacement Procedure¶
See SolarEdge Optimizers — Replacement Procedure for full procedure.
Summary: 1. SafeDC confirmed / DC verified at zero 2. Disconnect MC4 inputs and outputs 3. Remove from rail 4. Install new unit 5. Verify in SolarEdge GO (may take 5–15 minutes to appear)
