Level 3 O&M Technician

Role Overview

The O&M Technician is an independent field operator. They handle complex residential and light-commercial sites, diagnose multi-system faults, write complete inspection packages, and communicate findings professionally to clients. They may lead apprentices and junior technicians in the field.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead residential and light-commercial O&M visits
  • Perform advanced diagnostics across SolarEdge, SMA, microinverter, and Tigo systems
  • Manage an apprentice or junior tech in the field
  • Deliver complete inspection packages including thermal analysis
  • Maintain client relationships professionally
  • Begin building drone inspection capability

Level 3 Objectives

All Inverter Platforms

  • [ ] SolarEdge — full diagnostic capability including communication systems
  • [ ] SMA — string system diagnostics, monitoring platform navigation
  • [ ] Enphase — gateway diagnostics, per-panel issue identification
  • [ ] APsystems — ECU and monitoring navigation
  • [ ] Tigo — rapid shutdown verification, retrofit awareness

BESS Awareness

  • [ ] Battery fundamentals — SOC, DoD, cycle life, chemistry types
  • [ ] Lithium safety — thermal runaway signs, emergency response
  • [ ] BMS concepts — what the BMS does and why it matters
  • [ ] EG4 — can perform inspection of EG4 system and document

Commercial O&M

  • [ ] Comfortable on commercial flat rooftops
  • [ ] Can manage string combiner boxes
  • [ ] Three-phase inverter awareness
  • [ ] Commercial reporting standards

Field Leadership

  • [ ] Mentors Level 1 effectively — patient, clear, safety-focused
  • [ ] Makes correct escalation decisions independently
  • [ ] Handles client communication without lead tech present

Documentation

  • [ ] Case study entries — contributes new cases to the portal
  • [ ] Inspection packages complete and client-ready on first draft

Portfolio Reading List — Level 3

  • OSHA 30
  • NABCEP PV Installation Professional (or O&M Professional)
  • FAA Part 107 (begin if not complete)
  • First Aid / CPR / AED (maintain current)
